The Responsible AI team is part of the Advanced Technologies Group (ATG), Pinterest's advanced machine learning team. ATG's goal is to keep Pinterest at the forefront of machine learning technology across multiple use cases including recommendations, ranking, content understanding, and more. It is an applied team that works horizontally across the company on state of the art AI and ML and works on directly bringing that technology to the product in collaboration with product engineering teams. The team also publishes its work in applied research conferences, but the main goal of the team is to have a direct impact on business metrics.

At Pinterest, the product is powered by state of the art ML algorithms which are used to understand billions of visually rich items on the platform and the interests of our 500M+ monthly active users to recommend personalized content. ML at Pinterest is multi-modal, utilizing image, text, and graph signals, and operates at a very large scale and often in real time interactive user experiences.

Pinterest is known for being a positive and inspirational place on the internet. The Responsible AI team is a horizontal team that collaborates across the company on initiatives including Generative AI alignment, evaluation, mitigations, ML Fairness, and user-facing features such as features to enhance the product for all users. This includes launching features like user-controllable skin tone, hair pattern search refinements, and more recently, body type.

What you'll do

• Lead projects in the responsible AI frontier to identify, avoid, and mitigate bias across a wide range of ML applications at Pinterest including generative AI.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams (trust and safety, user modeling, content understanding) to leverage their platforms and signals and co-develop adoption and evaluation of Responsible AI practices and ML Fairness tooling across Pinterest.
• Mentor junior engineers on the Responsible AI team and across the company in the R-AI space.
• Work with the team and senior leaders to define and drive technical strategy in this area.

What we're looking for

• Extensive, real-world experience applying advanced ML methods to production systems, with a strong track record in responsible technology spanning fairness, ethics, and societal considerations.
• Deep familiarity with cutting-edge ML architectures (e.g., transformer-based models, 2-tower architectures, LLMs) and their applications in large-scale Search and Recommender Systems.
• Proven ability to measure, deploy, and refine fairness interventions and broader Responsible AI solutions at scale, bridging state-of-the-art research with tangible product impact.
• 5+ years working experience in engineering teams that build large-scale ML-driven user-facing products
• 2+ years experience leading cross-team engineering efforts
• Masters or PhD in Computer Science or related field
• Desired skills:
• Track record in shaping and executing large-scale technical roadmaps, balancing immediate needs with long-term vision, defining clear OKRs, and orchestrating cross-functional efforts to deliver production-grade solutions that significantly enhance user experiences.
• Deep expertise in designing and scaling backend and ML systems for high-traffic, user-facing products, with full-stack understanding of system architecture, data pipelines, and model deployment workflows.
• Proven success in deploying ML capabilities that improve fairness and reduce bias in recommendation, content understanding, and ranking systems at scale.
