Job Summary

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is a licensed nurse who uses the BSWH nursing professional practice model to deliver patient care as part of the health care team. Using the nursing process and under appropriate supervision, the LVN performs focused assessments, participates in care planning and interventions, evaluates patient progress, documents and reports findings to the supervising RN, and complies with the Texas Nursing Practice Act (NPA).

Essential Functions of the Role

  • Using clinical judgment to conduct accurate focused assessments according to practice standards and LVN scope of practice, and report data to assist RN in developing a plan of care and setting goals.
  • Participating in the evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, including nursing-sensitive indicators.
  • Creating a compassionate, supportive, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff; managing emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing.
  • Recognizing and incorporating patients' and families' unique differences (culture, spirituality, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and values) into individualized care plans.
  • Preserving confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients and families; identifying, reporting, and helping resolve ethical and clinical concerns.
  • Facilitating learning for patients, families, nursing staff, other healthcare team members, and the community.
  • Collaboratively working with RN, provider, colleagues, and community members under RN/provider direction to implement integrated plans of care.
  • Participating in problem‑solving for patients, families, and staff using available resources and strategies.
  • Demonstrating professionalism by pursuing lifelong learning, continuing education, certification, and professional development.

Key Success Factors

  • Knowledge and understanding of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, hospital policies, and accreditation guidelines relevant to nursing care.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and principles of health promotion, disease prevention, medication dosages, and adverse reactions.
  • Knowledge of nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
  • Clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to observe changes in medical conditions and communicate these changes effectively to nursing staff and physicians/providers.
  • Ability to provide age‑specific, quality, patient‑centered care sensitive to diversity.
  • General computer skills (Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling, payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, email).

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Major: Nursing.
  • Experience: Less than 1 year of experience.
  • Certification/License/Registration: Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).
  • BLS: Basic Life Support (BLS) or BLS within 30 days of hire.
