POSITION SUMMARY:
The library assistant is a person trained and skilled in the areas of technical services who is in charge of overseeing basic school library operations. The library assistant assists others in using the library catalog system, library computers and software, and audiovisual equipment. An effective library assistant has the ability to work independently and cope with continual interruptions and shifting job priorities. He or she should have excellent computer and keyboarding skills. Interests, skills, and the affinity for working directly with young people is necessary. This is a position that involves a great deal of activity and requires strong public-relations skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists in maintaining an organized and up-to-date catalog and circulation system.
• Processes new materials, making them ready for checkout.
• Keeps the library organized, clean, neat, and welcoming to visitors.
• Prepares bulletin boards, displays, bibliographies, etc. on a regular basis.
• Helps students and staff locate materials through the use of the automated catalog and electronic resources.
• Monitors students while using the library, including elementary library specials.
• Leads mini-library lessons during elementary library specials.
• Assists with test administrations.
• Prepares and disseminates overdue notices and collects replacement costs for lost/damaged items.
• Maintains an accurate inventory of library and instructional materials, including instructional technology such as projectors, document cameras, and CD/DVD drives.
• Shelves materials and makes sure items are maintained in Dewey order.
• Obtains basic or "copy cataloging" information for newly acquired materials.
• Keeps statistical records on usage, circulation, etc.
• Notifies students when reserved books are available.
• Assists with displays and other special projects.
• Supervises and executes automated inventory.
• Helps to maintain a friendly and helpful atmosphere for students and faculty.
• Performs any other related duties that may be assigned by campus administrators.
• Makes resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school.
• Provides access to the library collection through the management of an accurate and efficient organization and retrieval system.
• Assists students in identifying, locating and interpreting information housed in the library and helps students locate information outside the library.
• Provides access to the library per established schedule.
• Organizes and manages the library in a manner that encourages access.
• Informs teachers, students, parents and administrators of new materials, equipment and services that meet their information needs.
• Manages selection and ordering of materials through the district process that involves teachers, administrators, students and parents, with final approval of any new library materials by the district textbook coordinator.
• Withdraws dated materials and orders replacements as needed.
• Disposes of out-of-adoption instructional materials with the approval of the district textbook coordinator.
• Communicates library program needs to the administration.
• Completes campus laminating projects per established procedures.
• Manages student library aides, including recording attendance, assigning tasks, and overseeing task completion.
• Coordinate bi-annual Book Fairs
• Follows copyright laws.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Must have and maintain a level of general physical/ emotional health, which permits effective performance and duties.
• Involves both in-door and out-door activities, on campus and off campus.
• Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES REQUIRED:

• Knowledge of word processing, data entry, and online searching.
• Ability to keep accurate records.
• Understanding of library operations and general secretarial skills.
• Knowledge of library cataloging systems.
• Ability to maintain clerical and financial records and prepare routine reports.
• Ability to operate a word processor and standard office equipment with extreme accuracy and speed.
• A high school diploma is required and preferably, college credits toward a Bachelor's Degree are preferred.
