Horton, Inc. is currently looking for a Claims Counsel . The right candidate is responsible for managing, evaluating, and resolving title insurance claims and related disputes. This role provides legal analysis and strategic guidance on complex title, escrow, underwriting, and real estate matters, mitigates financial and legal risk, and partners closely with operations, underwriting, and leadership teams to support consistent, compliant claims handling nationwide.This position may be performed remotely. Candidates residing in Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Connecticut, Louisiana, and Wisconsin will be considered.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesManage title insurance claims from initial notice through resolution, including coverage analysis, investigation, negotiation, settlement, and litigation oversightAnalyze title policies, commitments, endorsements, escrow instructions, and real property records to determine coverage, liability exposure, and appropriate claim strategyProvide legal advice and guidance to claims, underwriting, escrow, and operational teams on title, real estate, and insurance related legal issuesDirect and oversee outside counsel handling title claims and related litigation, including case strategy, budgeting, performance management, and settlement authorityNegotiate claim resolutions, settlements, and releases in alignment with corporate risk tolerance, financial objectives, and regulatory requirementsEnsure claims handling practices comply with applicable state insurance regulations, title insurance laws, and internal governance standardsMaintain accurate documentation, reporting, and file management to support audits, regulatory inquiries, and executive reportingIdentify emerging claim trends, systemic risks, and root causes, and collaborate with business partners to recommend corrective actions, training, or process improvementsConduct all business in a professional and ethical manner to serve customers and increase the goodwill and profit of the companyAbility to travel overnightSupervisory ResponsibilitiesMay have supervisory responsibilitiesQualificationsEducation and/or ExperienceJuris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA ‑ accredited law schoolActive license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; ability to obtain admission in additional jurisdictions as neededMinimum of 5 years of legal experience in title insurance claims, real estate litigation, insurance defense, or related practice areasStrong knowledge of title insurance policies, real property law, and escrow practicesExperience managing litigation and working effectively with outside counselProven ability to evaluate risk, exercise sound judgment, and negotiate favorable claim outcomesStrong computer skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn new programs/systems quickly is essentialAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form or via DRH applicationsAbility to sit for majority of 8-hour workday; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
