We are a dynamic, rapidly growing organization seeking energetic individuals passionate about identifying and developing data‑driven, pragmatic solutions to address the critical issues that matter most to all Texans.About the RoleThe Staff Accountant supports the organization's financial operations with primary responsibility for expenditure processing and monthly balance sheet reconciliations. This role manages accounts payable, employee reimbursements, vendor administration, and related accounting activities while supporting close, audit, compliance and other financial reporting needs. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant will work closely with other members of the finance team to maintain accurate financial records, prepare financial reports and ensure compliance with internal controls.This role is well suited for a detail‑oriented accountant who has built a foundation through hands‑on accounting experience and is ready to take increasing ownership of close, reconciliation, compliance and reporting responsibilities over time. The ideal candidate will be detail‑oriented and able to manage multiple priorities while contributing to the organization's financial stability and reporting accuracy.ResponsibilitiesMonth‑End, Quarter‑End and Year‑End CloseOwn assigned components of the monthly close, including accounts receivable tracking and reconciliation, preparing journal entries (accruals, prepaids, deferrals, allocations, reclassifications), meeting established close deadlinesPrepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations with complete supporting documentation, ensuring accounts are accurate and reconciling items are resolved timelyMaintain the general ledger, investigating unusual activity and preparing recurring close schedules (e.g., fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, revenue, accounts receivable)Support quarterly and year‑end close, including preparing schedules, work papers, and financial statement support for internal review and external auditResearch and resolve discrepancies and technical accounting questions, escalating complex matters as appropriateProvide support on more complex accounting areas and close deliverables as proficiency grows, with opportunities to take on increasing ownership over timeAccounts Payable, Disbursements and Vendor ManagementProcess accounts payable and employee expense reimbursements, ensuring accuracy, proper approvals, policy compliance and timely paymentManage vendor administration, including vendor files, W‑9 collection, payment inquiries and year‑end 1099 reportingSupport purchasing and contract administration, including routing agreements for approval, maintaining records; tracking key dates, payment terms, and budget alignmentMonitor expenditure activity for appropriate coding, approvals and compliance with internal policiesCompliance, Controls and ReportingEnsure compliance with GAAP, applicable regulations and organizational policies; help strengthen internal controls and documentationMaintain supporting documentation for regulatory and nonprofit‑specific filings, including IRS Form 990 and lobbying expendituresAssist with budget tracking, variance analysis and other financial reporting requested by leadershipCollaboration and Continuous ImprovementCollaborate across departments to support financial operations, leverage technology to improve efficiency and accuracy, assist with in‑office and operations‑related needs; and complete other tasks as assignedDemonstrate curiosity and willingness to explore emerging tools, including AI and automation, to enhance accounting workflows, accuracy and efficiencyQualifications2+ years of relevant accounting experience preferred, exceptional early‑career candidates with strong internship or nonprofit accounting experience may also be consideredBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related fieldWorking knowledge of GAAP; familiarity with nonprofit accounting is a plusProficiency with accounting software and a track record of maintaining accurate, well‑documented financial recordsStrong reconciliation skills (bank, credit card, and general ledger accounts) and sound judgment on account codingExcellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environmentStrong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholdersProficiency with office technology systems, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, GSuite; experience with accounting systems, preferably Intacct, Bill/Divvy and NexoniaWillingness to learn and leverage AI and emerging technology in accounting workflowsAbility to work independently, solve problems and maintain confidentialityDesire to see Texas be the best place to live and work through 2036 and beyondLocationThe Staff Accountant is a Texas‑based position with a strong preference for candidates located in Austin . The role is remote for employees located in Texas but outside the Austin region. For employees in Austin, the role is a hybrid role and the employee will be expected to be present in the office during the work day, at least two days a week on average. Additional office days may be required as needed.Regardless of location, the Staff Accountant must be willing to travel (up to 10% if Austin‑based, 20% if based outside of Austin) to other cities in Texas for meetings with Texas 2036 staff, board members, advisors, staff, stakeholders and partners.Compensation and BenefitsTexas 2036 offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. The target salary range for this position is $70,000 – $85,000.
